Wine Tours and Wineries
Possibly the only vineyard in the country to grow only Italian grapes, Heron’s Flight Winery and Restaurant is a must-stop on any wine tour of New Zealand.
The Italian varietals Sangiovese and Dolcetto are planted on 15 acres of land. The climate of the Matakana Valley makes this the perfect area for these reds. The Sangiovese, originally from Tuscany, has a deep, fruity flavour. Dolcetto is an earlier variety and produces small, sweet grapes at the beginning of the summer. The Dolcetto from Heron’s Flight has a characteristic aroma of cherry and plum.
In addition to fine wines, Heron's Flight also produced medal-winning, extra virgin olive oils as well as grape juice.
Heron’s Flight Winery has been in business for 25 years, creating fine, Italian-style wines in the Matakana Valley. This family-owned winery has evolved dramatically over the years. Today, the vineyard focuses entirely on the creation of high quality products and sustainable practices to ensure a long future for the vineyard.
